Freshly invigorated by my recent journeys to Himeji and Osaka, I went out to explore the Mito inaka a little more. This time I went to a far away place […]
A couple of weeks ago, when I was looking up something on the map around Daikumachi in Mito, I noticed that there is a shrine I have never noticed, but from its location I must have passed well over a hundred times by now. Admittedly most of these times were by bus, but also I have not noticed it in any information material I gathered over the years. Mito Hachimangu (水戸八幡宮み, とはちまんぐう) is located close to the above mentioned street and is still considered to be in the “romantic zone”.
The trip to Ota City took us to Kamatahachiman Jinja (蒲田八幡神社, かまたはちまんじんじゃ) first. After that we got lost on the way to our next destination and ended up at Haneda airport. From there we walked back to Anamori Inari Jinja (穴守稲荷神社, あなもりいなりじんじゃ) to look at the wonderful red gates. On our way there we passed a big red gate with the inscription “peace” pointing toward the airport. Our last stop was Ikegami Honmon-ji (池上本門寺, いけがみほんもんじ) and the adjacent park. We made it there without problems.

It is a Japanese custom to bring back souvenirs, so called おみあげ (omiage). Traditional gifts are the local sweets, hence you usually wait until the last day to buy them. […]
Having a couple of free days is a good time connecting to the city you live in. Today I found another small but beautiful shrine in a part of town […]
Shrines are quite common in Mito. This shall Shinto shrine is very close to the station and I remember it best for the annual crafts beer festival. A big read […]
A couple of weeks ago I first noticed this usually peaceful place: Zōjō-ji. Today there is the Myanmar festival happening, so it is quite packed. I like this temple for […]
